The Demonic Dominion has held the nation of Io captive for more than a century. The Humans are in shackles. The Elves are in exile. And the race of Majiski battle-mages has been all but eradicated by the Demons and their ilk.
Racath Thanjel is among the few remaining Majiski surviving in secret. A strong but opinionated young assassin, he works from the shadows against the Demonic Dominion. But how can he and the others hope to defeat such a terrible adversary? Especially when their patriarch is keeping more secrets than the Demons themselves.
Now, as a tangle of conspiracies, secrets, and ancient prophecies sweeps Racath away, he must choose his destiny will he become the long-awaited Savior of Io, or allow it to suffocate beneath the Dominion's iron fist?

ATTRITION is an impressive debut for Mr. Night. The opening chapter pulled me right in, but there were so many typos and missing words that it definitely took away from the enjoyment of reading the book. The main character, Racath Thanjel, one of the few remaining Majiski is the reluctant hero and the world he inhabits is nicely fleshed out. I found it curious though that whatever skill or magic power he needed at the moment to overcome and defeat his enemies seemed to come to him at just the right time. Also, the middle of the book dragged with the telling of the histories of God. My harshest criticism is the way the narrator kept inserting himself in the middle of scenes. It was jarring to be in Racath's POV and then be pulled out of it when the narrator comments on something. This is not to say it's a bad book, far from it. When you factor in how young the author is, it is quite a feat. With the skill of a good editor, this book could definitely be 5 stars.Product details

Attrition The First Act of Penance Three Acts of Penance Book 1 eBook SG Night Reviews
Thought this was a great read ! The storys building blocks beautifully assembled, the subtle and not so subtle growth of the characters , terrifically thought out fight scenes, who can ask for more?! Reminiscent of Goodkind and Jordan ( without the convoluted excess of Jordan) this will make fans a very happy addition! Definitely will read more and highly recommend !!
At first I had a problem with the editing but the story makes that obsolete. The book had me from the beginning to the end. Absolutely loved the characters and the description of their surroundings. The only part I found slow was the reading of their Gods scripture but it was necessary to assist in filling in the blanks pertaining to the prophesy. Can't wait for the rest of the series completion.
As stated above, this a is solid debut novel. The story is fun and interesting, the magic system is pretty solid, and the world building is done rather well, although I not favorable to the history lesson given before the story starts as a means for history/back story. The only thing holding the book back is a weakness in the characters, they are just a little to cliche for my liking, not exactly cookie cutter cut outs, but not far from that either. Otherwise, I more than enjoyed this book, looking forward to the next installment.
It was with low expectations that I started reading Attrition, not because of the authors age or that this where his debut, but because so many reason books in the fantasy genre have use the genre as a setting for telling ordinary contemporary stories and completely missing the opportunity to truly build a world that the reader can immerse themselves in - and I couldn’t be more wrong. It is clear from page one that the author is truly in love with the world he is creating and of course the characters that inhabits it. Even though that the author at times seems to get lost in the details of his world and words he always seems to find his way back which keeps the reader from giving up on the story.
A really well crafted story and I have already put the sequel on my “To read”-list.
An interesting world with some characters of potential. However the author, in my view, needs to learn to convey information via the characters. Vastly too much narration and not enough character building.
The world had a very interesting build but the magic schema provided a convenient way out when ever one was needed. In doing so it reduced the credibility of the story. If every time our heroes are going to find a miraculous tool to get them out of a jam then plot and characterization are the poorer.
I was left interested in the characters but not the author. Still a question in my mind about whether to brave a subsequent installment.
- This book is for people who like fantasy novels
- It includes demons, elves, magic, assassinations, gods, adventure
- The story is not heavy on romance but it has some for those who are interested
- The book is written in multiple perspectives. [On a personal note, I wasn't fond of the first person/present tense beginning (and ending) that interrupted the story a few times when it was in the third person/past tense. It took me out of the story rather than added to it]
- The book explains a lot of the history of the fantasy world and how things came to be the way they are. Some books gloss over this, but this one does not
- I think the story would have been better if there was a professional editor involved
I confess that the grimdark has lost its appeal. It was good when Mark lawrence did it.But now every one out there is throwing in and pretty much every hero is getting beaten & every heroine violated.People have to come to accept that if a book should get gritty real tag they have to kill one POV per book, brutally...period..
Attrition is different. It made realize how much I missed mixed race stories of old (Pointy eared elves and red bearded dwarves..).Mark me this is not fellowship cliche stolen from tolkien's tomes. He has created a grim ,dark world (LOL..)of Io where men are reeling under the dominion of demons. They have subjugated the people and indoctrinated them with their faux religion and set themselves up as gods.
Racath Thanjel , is a Majiski(A new race! yippeee.. ) assassin of Genshewin (A shadyrebel group) is our dragon reborn in this saga. There are strong female characters and there is detailed history that rivals Silmarillion for geeks out there. And thank god..the romance is not romanticized..women doesn't have to be mysterious & intimacy phobic Denna .It all looks real and cute.Action is not simply parry, dodge and reading opponent's pattern. Its more visual and mostly 3 dimensional. You Feel like finishing a pretty nasty boss battle in God of War.Magic is not subtle as is trend today, its more of verbose kind.
On the whole its an enjoyable ride, though there are minor hiccups in language.I recommend it to all who are mired deep in the misery of grim dark -verse.come on people there's hope in Io..Racath will free Io and you from GRIMDARK demons..
